Why Skills Beat Prompts

Most people use Claude the same way every time. They type a prompt, get a response, and start over from scratch. The problem is that every session starts at zero. You have to re explain your process, your preferences, and your standards each time.

A skill fixes this. A skill is a saved set of instructions that Claude follows every time you run it. One command and it executes the whole process for you. No re explaining. No starting over. You teach Claude once and it follows that process forever.

Prompts vs skills: a prompt is a one time instruction. A skill is a repeatable workflow. Prompts reset every session. Skills persist across every conversation. Build a skill once and you never have to write that prompt again.

The 2 Step Framework

Step 1: research. Tell Claude to go find the best current strategies for whatever you are trying to do. It pulls from Reddit, X, YouTube, blogs, and forums from the last 30 days. This means your skill is not based on outdated training data. It is based on what is actually working right now.

This is the part most people skip. They build skills based on what they already know, which means their AI workflows are limited to their existing knowledge. Research first, and your skills are automatically better than everyone else's.

Step 2: build the skill. Tell Claude to take that research and turn it into a skill. A skill is a markdown file with clear instructions that Claude reads every time you invoke it. It includes the process, the standards, the formatting rules, and the quality checks.

Once the skill is built, you run it with a single command. Claude reads the skill file, follows every instruction, and delivers the output. Same quality every time.

1. Viral script writer. Research the hooks and formats that are trending this week on TikTok and Reels. Build a skill that writes short form scripts using those patterns. Every script comes out formatted with hooks, text overlays, and CTAs based on what is performing right now.
