What You'll Learn

  • Step-by-step setup plus the room redesign workflow
  • Exact prompts for 5 design styles
  • How to add specific furniture and iterate designs

What You Need

You need three things before you start: Claude Code, a free API key from Google AI Studio, and the Nano Banana skill from GitHub.

  1. Install Claude Code. Claude Code is the AI coding agent from Anthropic. Install it from claude.ai/code or run:
npm install -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code
  1. Get a Google AI Studio API key. Go to Google AI Studio and generate a free API key. This connects Claude to Nano Banana, which is the best model for generating images.
  2. Download the skill from GitHub. Go to GitHub and download the Nano Banana skill. This teaches Claude how to write professional prompts for Nano Banana so your images actually come out right.

Quick check: already have everything installed? Type /banana in a Claude Code conversation. If it responds, you're ready to go.

The Room Redesign Workflow

Once you're set up, the whole process takes about 30 seconds. Here's the exact flow:

  1. Take a photo of your room. Snap a photo of the room you want to redesign. Phone camera works fine. Capture the full space so Claude can see the layout, furniture, and lighting.
  2. Upload it to Claude. Open Claude Code and drag the photo right into the conversation.
  3. Tell it what you want. Be descriptive. Give it your vibe, what you like about the space, what you don't like about it, and the style you're going for. Then watch it go to work.
  4. Get design ideas back. 30 seconds later you get full design ideas for your room. Different layouts, colors, and furniture options.
  5. Add specific elements. You can tell it to add in specific furniture or elements and it will rework the designs. Want your bike rack on that wall? Your standing desk by the window? Just tell Claude and it adjusts.

The 5 Best Prompts For Room Redesigns

These are the exact prompts that get the best results. Copy them directly and swap in your own details.

Modern minimalist living room:

Here's a photo of my living room. I want to redesign it with a modern minimalist style. Clean lines, neutral tones with one accent color, minimal furniture. Budget is under $3,000. Keep the couch, change everything else. Generate 3 different design concepts.

Cozy farmhouse bedroom:

Redesign this bedroom in a cozy farmhouse style. Warm wood tones, soft textiles, layered lighting. I want it to feel like a high-end Airbnb. Budget is flexible. Show me options with and without replacing the bed frame.

Mid-century modern home office:

Transform this home office into a mid-century modern workspace. Think walnut wood, clean geometric shapes, a statement desk lamp. I need good task lighting and a comfortable chair for 8+ hours. Generate concepts that maximize the natural light from the window.

Scandinavian kitchen and dining:

Redesign this kitchen/dining area in Scandinavian style. Light wood, white walls, functional minimalism. I want to maximize storage without cluttering the space. Show me options for open shelving vs closed cabinets.

Industrial loft studio:

Give this studio apartment an industrial loft feel. Exposed materials, metal accents, edison bulbs, leather. I want distinct zones for sleeping, working, and lounging without walls. Generate a layout that makes 500 sq ft feel bigger.

Getting Better Results

The quality of your redesign depends on how well you communicate with Claude. Here are the details that make the biggest difference:

  • Be descriptive about your vibe. Don't just say "modern," say what you actually like and don't like about the space right now.
  • Tell Claude to add specific furniture or elements you want included: bikes, standing desks, bookshelves, whatever you need in the room.
  • Mention what you want to KEEP. Claude will design around it instead of replacing everything.
  • Ask for multiple concepts. "Show me 3 different approaches" gives you options to mix and match.
  • Reference specific rooms you've seen. "Something like a West Elm showroom" gives Claude a concrete target.

Pro move: after you get a redesign you like, ask Claude to create a shopping list with estimated prices and links. It will break down every piece of furniture and decor item with alternatives at different price points.

Beyond Single Rooms

Once you've got the workflow down for one room, you can scale it across your entire space:

  • Redesign multiple rooms with a cohesive style. Share all room photos at once and ask Claude to create a unified design language.
  • Stage a home for sale. Ask Claude for neutral, buyer-friendly staging concepts that maximize perceived value.
  • Plan a renovation. Show Claude the current space and describe structural changes you're considering, then visualize the result before committing.
  • Design a room from scratch. Moving into an empty space? Give Claude the dimensions and photos of the empty room, and let it design from zero.
