Setup: Connect Claude To Google Workspace

To get Claude building spreadsheets in your Google Sheets, you need to install the Google Workspace CLI skill. This connects Claude to your entire Google Workspace: Sheets, Docs, Drive, everything.

1. Install Claude Code. If you don't have it: npm install -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code
2. Download the CLI skill from GitHub. Go to GitHub and download the Google Workspace CLI skill. This is what gives Claude direct access to your Google Sheets.
3. Connect your Google account. Follow the auth flow to connect your Google account. Once connected, Claude can create, read, and edit any spreadsheet in your Google Sheets.
4. Test it. Ask Claude to create a simple spreadsheet in Google Sheets. If a new sheet appears in your Drive with data in it, you're set up.

Pro tip: once connected, you can also link these templates directly to the projects you're working on inside Claude Code. This gives you full insight into every project without ever having to copy and paste data between tools.

5 Financial Template Prompts

These are the exact prompts to use. Each one produces a fully formatted spreadsheet with working formulas, color coding, and categories built out. Claude even adds charts to visualize the data.

1. Profit and Loss Statement

Build me a Profit & Loss statement in Google Sheets for my [business type]. Include
revenue categories, cost of goods sold, operating expenses broken out by category,
and auto-calculated totals for gross profit, operating profit, and net profit. Add
monthly columns for the full year with quarterly and annual summaries. Include
charts to visualize revenue vs expenses and profit trends.

2. Monthly Budget

Build me a monthly budget template in Google Sheets. Include income tracking with
multiple sources, expense categories (housing, transportation, food, entertainment,
subscriptions, savings), auto-calculated totals, and a comparison column showing
budget vs actual. Color code cells that go over budget in red. Add a summary
dashboard with a pie chart showing expense breakdown.

3. Balance Sheet

Create a balance sheet template in Google Sheets for my [business type]. Include
current assets, fixed assets, current liabilities, long-term liabilities, and equity
sections. Auto-calculate total assets, total liabilities, and verify the accounting
equation (Assets = Liabilities + Equity). Format it professionally with clear
section headers.

4. Savings Goal Tracker

Build me a savings goal tracker in Google Sheets. I want to track multiple savings
goals with target amounts, current balances, monthly contribution amounts, and
estimated completion dates. Auto-calculate progress percentages. Add a progress bar
visualization for each goal and a chart showing total savings growth over time.

5. Business Expense Report

Create a business expense report template in Google Sheets. Include date, vendor,
category (travel, meals, supplies, software, marketing), amount, payment method, and
receipt status columns. Auto-calculate category subtotals, monthly totals, and
tax-deductible amounts. Add dropdown menus for categories and payment methods.
Include a summary section with charts.
