What Anthropic Actually Shipped
Anthropic released Claude for Small Business on May 13, 2026. It is a toggle inside Claude Cowork that puts Claude directly inside the tools small business owners already pay for: QuickBooks, PayPal, HubSpot, Canva, Docusign, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365. It ships with 15 ready-to-run agentic workflows and 15 skills built from the repeatable tasks owners said slow them down the most.
Why this is a bigger unlock than it sounds: small businesses make up 44% of US GDP and employ nearly half the private workforce, but AI adoption inside them has been almost nothing. The tools were built for enterprise. The training was built for engineers. Most owners stop at the chat window because nobody ever sold them a workflow. Claude for Small Business closes that gap in one toggle.
Workflow 1: Payroll Planning
Connect your QuickBooks and PayPal accounts. Claude pulls your cash position against incoming PayPal settlements, builds a 30-day forecast, ranks what is overdue, and queues your invoice reminders for you to approve and send.
What this replaces:
- 2 to 3 hours a week of manual reconciliation and spreadsheet juggling
- The "did this client actually pay?" detective work
- The slow Sunday-night cash position check before approving payroll
The approval step is the whole game. Nothing sends until you approve it. You stay in control, Claude does the grunt work. The output is a 30-day forecast, a list of overdue invoices ranked by amount and age, and a queue of draft reminders ready for your one-tap send.
Workflow 2: Month Close
At month-end, Claude reconciles your books against PayPal settlements, flags anything that does not match, writes a plain-English P&L, and exports a close packet you can forward straight to your accountant through QuickBooks.
Time savings: a weekend of manual close work becomes 10 minutes. Your bookkeeper still reviews the output, but they are reviewing a 90% done close, not building it from scratch. If you do not have a bookkeeper, the close packet is forwardable to anyone you want to sanity-check the numbers.
The part owners never built themselves: the plain-English P&L is the unlock most owners did not know they needed. Most bookkeeping software gives you the numbers. Claude tells you the story. "Revenue up 8% MoM, gross margin steady, customer acquisition cost up 14% because the August Meta campaign underperformed." That is the line you needed.
Workflow 3: Invoice Chasing
Claude scans your overdue invoices, drafts personalized follow-ups based on each customer's history and relationship, and queues them for your approval. Run it on a schedule and cash collection happens while you sleep.
What this replaces:
- The "I will chase that one tomorrow" pile that costs most small businesses 2 to 4 weeks of payment delay
- Writing the same awkward follow-up email to 6 different clients
- The mental overhead of remembering who paid and who did not
Why the tone stays right: Claude reads each customer's history before drafting. A long-time customer who pays late once gets a friendly nudge. A serial late-payer gets firm. A first-time enterprise client gets formal. You approve every draft, but you are approving a draft that already sounds like you wrote it.
Workflow 4: Campaign Building
Claude reads your HubSpot campaign performance, finds the slow stretch in your revenue, drafts a promotion strategy to fix it, and generates the Canva assets to launch. The full marketing pipeline collapses from "wait for the agency" to "approve and ship."
What you get in one run:
- A diagnosis of which campaign or channel is underperforming and why
- A 2-week promotion strategy with the exact offer, audience, and timing
- Canva-generated assets for every channel (email, social, paid)
- A schedule of when to ship each piece
What this replaces: 2 to 3 weeks of back-and-forth with a marketing agency or an in-house marketer. Claude turns it into a same-day cycle. You still approve every asset before it goes live, and you can edit any of them inline before approving.
The 8-Minute Setup
Setup takes about 8 minutes if you have your tool logins handy. The whole thing is OAuth-based, so you are not pasting API keys or installing anything.
- Open Claude Cowork (web or app). You need a Claude subscription with Cowork access.
- Find the Claude for Small Business toggle in the Cowork settings panel and switch it on.
- Connect your tools via OAuth. QuickBooks first, then PayPal, then HubSpot, Canva, Docusign. Each connector takes about 30 seconds.
- Pick a workflow from the templates. Start with payroll planning. It is the easiest first win and the most relatable output.
- Approve the first run, then schedule it. Once you trust the output, set it to fire on a cadence (daily, weekly, or monthly).
Trust and permissions: your existing permissions hold. If an employee cannot see something in QuickBooks today, they cannot see it through Claude. Anthropic does not train on your data by default on Team and Enterprise plans. Every workflow has an approval gate, so nothing sends, posts, or pays without your sign-off.
The Free AI Fluency Course
Anthropic also dropped a free on-demand course called AI Fluency for Small Business, built with PayPal and taught by actual small business owners who already run AI in their operations. The instructors include Prospect Butcher Co. in Brooklyn and MAKS TIPM Rebuilders in California. The course covers which tasks in your business are right for AI, how to get started safely, and how to use AI responsibly inside your operations.
Where to take it: anthropic.skilljar.com/ai-fluency-for-small-businesses (free, on-demand, available now)
The in-person tour: Anthropic and Tenex.co are running a free half-day in-person workshop tour starting May 14 in Chicago, with 100 small business owners per stop. Spring stops include Tulsa, Dallas, Hamilton Township NJ, Baton Rouge, Birmingham, Salt Lake City, Baltimore, San Jose, and Indianapolis. Attendees get a one-month Claude Max subscription. Search "Anthropic SMB workshop {your city}" or check anthropic.swoogo.com for the full schedule.
What To Do This Week
Pick workflow 1 (payroll planning). It is the most relatable output and the fastest first win. Run it on your real data, look at the 30-day forecast, and approve the first round of invoice reminders. Time the whole thing. If it took longer than your usual Sunday close-out, something is wrong with the setup. If it took 10% of the time, you have the unlock.
One final thing: most AI tools for small business have been point solutions. Bookkeeping AI. Marketing AI. Invoice AI. Each with its own login, pricing, and learning curve. Claude for Small Business is different because it operates inside the tools you already pay for, the same way a human employee would. The "while you sleep" part is real once you schedule the workflows. You wake up to approve, not to start.
