What Claude Routines Are
Launched April 14, 2026. Routines are the missing feature for Claude Code. You write a prompt, connect your tools, and tell Claude when to run it. It runs on Anthropic's cloud 24/7 even when your computer is off. This is what makes n8n, Zapier, and Make.com obsolete. Available on Pro (5 runs/day), Max (15/day), Team/Enterprise (25/day).
How To Build A Routine
- Option 1: /schedule in the terminal. Open Claude Code and type /schedule. It walks you through creating a routine with a schedule trigger.
- Option 2: claude.ai/code/routines. For API triggers (webhooks) or GitHub event triggers, go to claude.ai/code/routines and click New routine. Fill out the form with your prompt, connectors, and trigger type.
- Connect your tools once. Gmail, Slack, Notion, Google Drive, Linear. Each one is a single OAuth click in the MCP connectors settings.
- Test with Run Now before scheduling. Every routine has a Run Now button. Test once, check the output, then set your schedule.
Routine 1: Email Management
The prompt (copy paste):
Every morning check my Gmail for new emails. For each one: 1) Identify if it's a
brand deal inquiry, a client question, a community member reaching out, spam, or
something else. 2) For brand deals, draft a reply using my rate card (integration
$2500, dedicated video $5000, carousel $1500, UGC pack $3500). If budget is below my
rates, politely decline. 3) For client questions, pull context from prior threads
and draft a helpful reply. 4) File every contact into my Notion CRM (DB ID:
[YOUR_ID]) with Name, Company, Intent, Status=Needs Review. 5) Send me a Slack DM
with a categorized summary so I can review drafts before hitting send.
- Trigger: scheduled, daily at 7am
- Connectors: Gmail, Notion, Slack
Routine 2: Content Brief + Posting Plan
The prompt (copy paste):
Every morning generate my content brief and posting plan. 1) Query my Notion Script
Library (DB ID: [YOUR_ID]) for scripts posted in the last 7 days. Pull their views,
likes, saves, and shares. 2) Compare against my top 10 performers (Views > 50k).
Identify which hooks, topics, and frameworks are trending up or down this week.
3) Check my Script Library for scripts with Status=Ready to Post. Pick the best 2
for today based on the current pattern. 4) Write a 3-paragraph brief covering what
worked yesterday, what to post today, and any new topic ideas based on trends.
5) Post the full brief to my #content-brief Slack channel.
- Trigger: scheduled, daily at 8am
- Connectors: Notion, Slack
Routine 3: Viral Content Into Your AI Brain
The prompt (copy paste):
Every Sunday pull every new piece of content I've saved or bookmarked across the
week (Instagram saves, YouTube watch later, X bookmarks) and process it into my AI
brain. For each saved item: 1) Fetch the post content, caption, or transcript.
2) Extract the core insight, hook, framework, or concept worth remembering.
3) Classify by type: Hook Example, Creator Pattern, Product Idea, or Research
Finding. 4) Log to my Notion Inspiration Library (DB ID: [YOUR_ID]) with Source URL,
Creator, Platform, Hook Text, Framework, Insight, Date Added=today. 5) If it matches
an existing wiki page in my Obsidian vault, append a note to that page linking back
to the source. 6) Send a Slack summary of the week's best saves and what was added
to the brain.
- Trigger: scheduled, every Sunday at 6pm
- Connectors: Web (network access), Notion, Slack
Why This Kills n8n + Zapier + Make
n8n Cloud: $20/month. Zapier Professional: $49/month. Make Pro: $16/month. Every one of these forces you to build workflows by dragging and dropping boxes and configuring each step manually. When an API format changes, your workflow breaks. When a new edge case shows up, you rebuild.
Claude routines run on plain English prompts with a frontier AI reasoning layer. When things change, Claude adapts. When business logic evolves, you edit one sentence instead of rebuilding the whole workflow. The reasoning layer is the unlock.
Usage Tips
- Write self contained prompts. Routines run autonomously with no permission prompts. Be explicit about inputs, outputs, success criteria, and edge cases.
- Stack multiple triggers on one routine. A single routine can have schedule + API + GitHub triggers at once. Good for routines you want running on a cadence AND on demand.
- Monitor the Runs tab. Each routine tracks every execution with full logs. Debug broken routines by reading the actual session output.
- Stay inside your daily limit. Pro: 5 runs/day. Max: 15. Team: 25. Prioritize high value routines (daily email, daily briefs) over low value ones (weekly research).
