Anthropic shipped three updates to Claude Code in three days: Auto Mode fixes the permissions problem, AutoDream fixes the memory problem, and Computer Use turns Claude into a full desktop automation agent. Here's what each one does, how to set it up, and real use cases to try today.

What You'll Learn

  • Auto Mode: what it replaces and how to enable it
  • AutoDream: how memory consolidation works and why it matters
  • Computer Use: setup steps plus 5 things to try first
  • Quick-start action steps for each feature

What Changed

All three are available today. Auto Mode and AutoDream are in Claude Code now. Computer Use is in research preview for Pro and Max subscribers on Mac. These are live features you can turn on right now, not waitlists.

1. Auto Mode

What it does: If you've used Claude Code, you know the pain. You either approve every single action (slow, breaks your flow) or enable Dangerously Skip Permissions and hope nothing breaks. Auto Mode replaces both. Claude runs fully autonomous with safety checks built in. Risky operations like file deletions and system commands get flagged. Everything else executes without interruption.

How to enable it:

  1. Open Claude Code and go to Settings (or type /config)
  2. Under Permissions, switch from "Normal" or "Dangerously Skip" to "Auto"
  3. That's it. Claude now runs autonomously but flags anything destructive before executing.

Use cases:

  • Long-running code refactors: kick off a refactor, walk away, come back to it done
  • Multi-file edits: Claude handles dozens of changes without you approving each one
  • Project scaffolding: ask Claude to build out an entire project structure and let it run

2. AutoDream

What it does: Claude Code saves memory between sessions so it remembers your preferences, project context, and past decisions. The problem: those notes pile up. After weeks of use, your memory file gets bloated with outdated context, duplicate entries, and irrelevant details. AutoDream consolidates everything while Claude is idle. It compresses redundant notes, removes stale context, and keeps only what matters. Claude organizes its own brain while it sleeps.

How it works:

  • AutoDream activates automatically if you have AutoMemory enabled (on by default in recent versions)
  • Between sessions, Claude reviews its memory files and consolidates them
  • No setup required; it runs in the background when Claude is idle
  • Check your memory with /memory to see the cleaned-up version after a session break

Why it matters:

  • Better outputs: Claude works from clean, relevant context instead of bloated notes
  • No manual cleanup: you don't have to edit CLAUDE.md or memory files yourself anymore
  • Compounds over time: the longer you use Claude Code, the more AutoDream improves your experience

3. Computer Use

What it does: Claude controls your screen, mouse, and keyboard to automate tasks for you. It tries your connected apps first (Slack, Calendar, integrations). When there's no connector, it opens the app directly and does it itself. Every app on your Mac becomes something Claude can control. You can even text it tasks from your phone and come back to them done.

How to set it up:

  1. Requires a Pro ($20/mo) or Max ($100/mo) Claude subscription
  2. Open Claude Code or Claude Cowork and go to Settings
  3. Enable Computer Use under the experimental features section
  4. Grant screen recording and accessibility permissions when prompted (System Settings > Privacy & Security)
  5. Mac only for now. Research preview, so expect some rough edges.

5 things to try first:

  1. Have Claude research a topic in your browser and compile notes in a Google Doc
  2. Ask it to organize files on your desktop into folders by type
  3. Tell it to fill out a spreadsheet from data in an email or PDF
  4. Have it schedule meetings by opening Calendar and creating events
  5. Text it a task from your phone while you're away from your desk and come back to it finished

The Pattern To Watch

Every update Anthropic ships makes Claude more autonomous. Auto Mode removes permission friction. AutoDream removes memory management. Computer Use removes the terminal-only limitation. Claude is becoming an agent that works for you, not just with you. This pace is accelerating.
