Turn Saved Recipes Into A Filled Instacart Cart

Save recipe reels on Instagram like you already do. Once a week an AI agent reads them, builds a meal plan around what you actually like, and loads your real Instacart cart. You just open the app and tap Place Order.

Save recipe reels on Instagram like you already do. Once a week an AI agent reads them, builds a meal plan around the food you actually like, turns it into a shopping list, and loads your real Instacart cart. You open the app and tap Place Order. That is the only manual step, because no tool is allowed to check out for you.

What You'll Learn

  • How to build the whole grocery agent from a blank Claude Code session, step by step
  • The prompts for recipe sync, macros, weekly planning, and cart building
  • How to put it on weekly autopilot (with checkout always left to you)
  • The optional live dashboard you can share

What You Will Have When You Finish

  • A recipe library that fills itself from your Instagram saves
  • A weekly dinner plan that respects your macros, allergies, and what you hate
  • A clean shopping list with duplicates merged and pantry staples removed
  • A live dashboard you can share, showing the week's meals and your cart
  • Your real grocery cart built for you each week

You talk to it in plain English. "Plan this week, skip seafood, add eggs." It handles the rest.

Before You Start

You need four things:

  1. Claude Code installed and logged in (this is the engine)
  2. An Instagram account with a saved collection for recipes. Make one called Recipe and start saving reels into it
  3. An Instacart account with a delivery address set
  4. Homebrew on a Mac (for two small installs the agent needs)

That is it. No API keys to apply for. No monthly fees beyond what you already pay.

Step 1: Tell Claude What You Want To Build

Open a fresh Claude Code session in a new project folder and paste this:

I want to build a personal grocery agent. It should:
1. Pull recipes from a saved Instagram collection called "Recipe"
2. Extract the ingredients and estimate the macros for each recipe
3. Once a week, build a 5-dinner meal plan from recipes I like
4. Turn that into a consolidated shopping list (merge duplicates, drop pantry staples)
5. Build a real Instacart cart from the list
6. Show everything on a simple dashboard
Save all the data as markdown files so I own it. Walk me through it step by step.

Claude will scaffold the project. Let it create the folders and the core files.

Step 2: Connect Your Instagram Saves

The agent reads your saved "Recipe" collection using your normal logged-in session, so there is no risky new login. If you already pull Instagram saves for anything else, it piggybacks on that. If not, tell Claude:

Set up the Instagram piece. I want it to read my saved "Recipe" collection using my existing web session cookies, not a fresh login, so my account stays safe.

Save five or six recipe reels into the collection first, so there is something to read.

Step 3: Let It Read Your Recipes

Now run the sync. Tell Claude:

Sync my recipes. Read the Recipe collection, pull out the ingredients and steps, estimate the macros, and save each one as a file. Flag anything you cannot read clearly instead of guessing.

It uses your Claude login to read each caption, so you do not need a separate AI key. Recipes with a clear ingredient list get parsed. Anything that is more story than recipe gets flagged for review, so you never end up with junk in your list.

Step 4: Set Your Macros And Preferences

The plan should match how you eat. Tell Claude:

Interview me to set up my profile. Ask for my height, weight, age, activity level, and goal, then calculate my daily calorie and protein targets. Also ask about allergies, dietary restrictions, foods I won't eat, and the pantry staples I always keep so we never re-buy them.

Treat the macros as a guide, not a cage. The point is to eat food you want, with the numbers as a nudge.

Step 5: Build The Week And The List

Plan this week. Pick 5 dinners from my saved recipes, vary the cuisines, prefer the ones I like, and respect my allergies and dislikes. Then build the shopping list grouped by aisle, with pantry staples removed.

You get a plan and a list in seconds. Want changes? Just say so. "Swap Tuesday for something Thai." "Add eggs and bananas." "More protein this week." It rebuilds on the spot.

Step 6: Connect Instacart And Fill Your Cart

Two quick installs first. Tell Claude:

Set up Instacart ordering. Install what you need, help me log in with my Instacart session, and pick my store. I'm in [your city]. Then add this week's shopping list to my cart.

It logs in using your browser session, finds your local store, and adds each item to your real cart. When it finishes, open Instacart, look it over, and place the order.

One honest note: the matching is good but not perfect. Glance at the cart before you check out. If something is off, tell Claude "remove the X and add Y" and it fixes it. The more you use it, the sharper it gets.

Step 7: Put It On Autopilot

Set this to run every week automatically. Each Sunday morning, sync new recipes, build the plan and list, update the dashboard, and message me when it's ready to review. Don't place any order on its own.

Now you just save recipes during the week. Sunday morning the plan is waiting.

The Weekly Rhythm Once It Is Running

  1. You save recipe reels on Instagram during the week
  2. Sunday morning, the agent has a plan and a list ready
  3. You open the dashboard, tweak anything by telling Claude
  4. You say "build my cart"
  5. You open Instacart and tap Place Order

No spreadsheets. No meal-planning apps. No typing the same list every week.

Make It Shareable (Optional)

Want a live link to your weekly plan, the kind you can pull up on your phone or show a partner? Tell Claude:

Host my dashboard on a live web link and update it every time the plan or cart changes.

You get a clean page showing the week's meals, links back to the original recipe videos, and what is in your cart right now. Live demo dashboard: grocery-plan-coral.vercel.app

Why This Works

Most meal-planning tools fail because they ask you to start from scratch every week. This one starts from what you already do: saving food you want to eat. The agent does the boring middle part, the planning and the list and the cart, and hands you back the one decision that is actually yours, which is hitting order.

You own all of it. The recipes, the plan, the data, the whole thing lives in plain files on your machine. Nothing is locked in an app you have to keep paying for. Build it once. Eat better every week after.
