What Claude Cowork Does To Your Inbox

Claude Cowork is a mode inside the Claude Desktop app where Claude stops just answering questions and starts doing things for you. For inbox cleanup, it connects to your Gmail, scans your entire inbox, creates labels and filters, archives what you don't need, and organizes the rest, all after you review and approve.

What it can do:

  • Archive thousands of emails and hit Inbox Zero
  • Create custom Gmail labels (Receipts, Travel, Banking, etc.)
  • Build automatic filters so new emails flow into the right labels
  • Unsubscribe from newsletters and promotional senders
  • Organize emails by sender, category, or date

What it won't touch (unless you say so):

  • Emails from real people (friends, colleagues, clients)
  • Messages with attachments
  • Anything from your company domain
  • Emails you've starred or flagged as important

The key difference: Claude doesn't just tell you what to organize. It actually does the organizing for you. It creates the labels, builds the filters, archives the emails, and clicks through unsubscribe links. You just review the plan first.

Setup (5 Minutes)

What you need:

  • Claude Desktop app (free download from claude.ai/download)
  • A paid Claude plan (Pro at $20/mo, Max, Team, or Enterprise)
  • A Gmail account

Step 1: Connect your Gmail. Open Claude Desktop. Go to the Connectors settings and link your Gmail account. When prompted for permissions, set all Gmail permissions to "Always Allow." This lets Claude read, organize, and manage your inbox without asking for approval on every single action.

Step 2: Switch to Cowork mode. At the top of Claude Desktop, you'll see a toggle between "Chat" and "Cowork." Click Cowork. This switches Claude from conversation mode into task execution mode, where it can actually take actions on your behalf.

Step 3: Give Claude your cleanup prompt. Type a prompt that tells Claude exactly what you want done. Here's the exact prompt that works:

Make my inbox go to 0, and create labels and filters for all my emails, use your
judgement to create the filters and let me know before proceeding.

This tells Claude to use its own judgment to categorize your emails, but to show you the plan before executing. You stay in control.

Step 4: Review and confirm. Claude scans your inbox and presents a plan: the labels it wants to create, the filters it wants to build, and which emails it wants to archive. Review the plan, tell Claude if you want any changes, and confirm. Claude handles the rest.

Real results: in one test, Claude organized over 6,000 emails and built 8 automatic filters, all from a single prompt. Every existing email was archived into the correct label, and all future emails now flow into the right place automatically.
