The Claude Code Setting Almost Nobody Turns On

One command turns your terminal from an annoying black box into the best place to use Claude. Fullscreen rendering (a.k.a. no flicker mode) is an opt in research preview built into Claude Code. It is not a brand new release. It has been available since v2.1.89 and refined ever since, most people just never flipped it on.

The Problem It Fixes

The terminal is one of the most powerful places to use Claude Code, but the classic renderer had two annoyances. The whole screen would flicker and redraw on long sessions, and you could not click your cursor into the middle of your text. If you paste a big block or use voice to text, editing it was miserable: you were stuck holding backspace.

Turn It On

Type this inside Claude Code:

/tui fullscreen

The UI switches to fullscreen rendering. To switch back at any time:

/tui default

Older versions: on versions before v2.1.110 there is no /tui command. Set the environment variable before launching Claude Code instead:

CLAUDE_CODE_NO_FLICKER=1

What You Unlock

• Click anywhere in the input box to position your cursor instantly
• Drag to select any block of text, double click a word, triple click a line
• Click collapsed tool results to expand them, and click URLs and file paths
• No screen flicker on long sessions, with flat CPU and memory usage
• Smooth mouse wheel scrolling through the conversation

Why You Should Be Coding In The Terminal

Once the editing friction is gone, the terminal stops being a black box and becomes the fastest surface to work with Claude. You stay in one window, you keep full context, and you can iterate at the speed of typing instead of clicking around an IDE. For someone new to vibe coding, this single setting is the difference between fighting the tool and flowing with it.

Good To Know (Honest Caveats)

• It is a research preview, so behavior may change between versions
• Native Cmd+F is replaced by Ctrl+O then / for transcript search
• Over SSH or inside tmux, mouse capture can fight your native copy paste. Set CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_MOUSE=1 to keep no flicker but drop mouse features
• Not feeling it? Type /tui default to go back to the classic renderer
