Replace Your IDE With Claude Code Desktop

The new Claude Code desktop app (released April 14, 2026) organizes projects in folders, runs parallel agent sessions, builds routines, and notifies you when agents finish. For anyone doing agentic coding, it pretty much kills Cursor and VS Code. This lesson covers the full setup plus the 3 use cases that change how you build.

Why Switch From Terminal

Running all your Claude Code sessions out of terminal windows means multiple tmux panes, constant switching between them, and no visual feedback on what each agent is doing. The desktop app gives you project folders, parallel agent sessions, routines, and completion notifications in one window.

Getting Started

1. Download or update the Claude desktop app. Go to claude.com/download. If you already have the app, update to the latest version. Click the Code tab in the top left nav.
2. Open your first project. Click New session. Select a local folder or connect a GitHub repo. Pick your branch.
3. Pick your model and effort level. Bottom right of the session screen. Sonnet or Opus with an effort selector. Remembered per project.
4. Explore the sidebar. Your projects, sessions, and routines are all listed. Sessions awaiting input float to the top. Notifications tell you when agents finish.

Use Case 1: Project Workspace

The sidebar is where everything lives now. Each project is a folder with its agent sessions nested underneath. You can:

• Open and organize projects
• Spin up multiple agent sessions running in parallel
• Build and organize routines and automations (scheduled, API triggered, or GitHub triggered)
• See notifications when agents complete their tasks

This is the feature that makes separate terminal windows unnecessary. Everything Claude is doing across all your projects is visible in one place.

Use Case 2: Live Preview + Click To Context

Open a preview panel inside your session. Your live app renders right there in the window. Click any element in your app, a button, a card, a heading, and Claude adds it straight to context. You can say "fix this button" without taking a screenshot or explaining which one. This replaces the screenshot copy paste workflow that Cursor users are stuck with. Toggle between mobile and desktop views to check responsive behavior instantly.

Use Case 3: Your CLI Setup Moves Over

This is the best part. Every skill and connector from your terminal CLI works in the desktop app the exact same way. Nothing to reinstall. Nothing to reconfigure.

• If you have a SKILL.md in ~/.claude/skills/, it shows up in desktop immediately
• If you set up MCP connectors (Gmail, Slack, Notion, Drive), those work too

The Layout That Works

1. Left sidebar: projects + sessions + routines. Every project folder lists its agent sessions underneath. Routines live here too. Sessions awaiting input float to the top.
2. Middle: chat with Claude. Main conversation. Streaming responses. Three view modes: Verbose (full tool calls), Normal (balanced), Summary (just results).
3. Right: preview panel. Live rendered app inside the window. Click to context on any element. Mobile/desktop toggle.
4. Bottom: terminal + diff viewer. Integrated terminal for tests and builds. Diff viewer to review every change Claude made before shipping.

Keyboard Shortcuts Worth Learning

• Cmd + / (Ctrl + / on Windows): show every keyboard shortcut. Keep this open your first week.
• Cmd + ; (Ctrl + ;): side chat. Ask a question without polluting your main thread. Context flows in, nothing flows back.
• Cmd + N: new session in any project.
• Cmd + K: quick session switcher. Jump between active sessions by name.

The Bottom Line

The desktop app is not a lesser version of the CLI. It is the CLI plus project management, visual feedback, live preview, and routines, all in one window. If you are building with Claude Code in any capacity, it is worth spending 30 minutes setting it up.
