Switch From ChatGPT To Claude Without Surprises
Everything you need to know so you're not surprised. The 5 biggest differences, exactly what to do about each one, and the prompting shift that changes everything.
No email required. Use it today.
Millions of people are switching to Claude right now. Most will type the same prompts they used in ChatGPT, get unremarkable answers, and quietly switch back within a week, not because Claude is worse, but because nobody told them it works differently. Here are the 5 biggest differences, exactly what to do about each one, and the prompting shift that changes everything.
What You'll Learn
- 5 key differences and exactly what to do about each one
- Real prompting examples: ChatGPT way vs Claude way
- What Claude can't do (yet) and the workarounds
Why This Guide Exists
ChatGPT was trained using RLHF (optimizing for thumbs-up reactions). Claude was trained using Constitutional AI (optimizing for honesty, helpfulness, and avoiding harm). This single difference explains almost everything in this guide.
Difference #1: Claude Doesn't Generate Images
ChatGPT has DALL-E and Sora built in. Claude cannot generate images or videos at all. If image creation is part of your daily workflow, this will feel like a downgrade on day one.
What to do: Keep ChatGPT (or Midjourney) for image generation. Use Claude for everything else: writing, analysis, strategy, coding, reasoning. Claude CAN analyze images you upload; it just can't create new ones. Pro tip: generate an image in ChatGPT, then upload it to Claude for brand feedback.
Difference #2: Claude Gives Shorter Answers
ChatGPT defaults to five paragraphs on everything. Claude says what it needs to say and stops. This is by design: Claude is trained to be helpful without padding. If you need more detail, these phrases work instantly:
Go deeper on point two.
Expand this into a full analysis.
Write this as a 2,000-word deep dive, not a summary.
Break this down step by step with examples.
Pro tip: Add this to your Project instructions: "I prefer comprehensive, detailed responses. Include examples and edge cases." Claude follows this in every conversation within that Project.
Difference #3: Claude Doesn't Know You Yet
ChatGPT spent months learning your preferences. Claude starts from zero. Fix this in 5 minutes: go to Claude.ai, click Projects, create one, and fill in WHO you are and HOW you work. Upload reference docs. Every conversation inside that Project already knows your context.
Example Project instructions for a freelance copywriter:
I'm a freelance copywriter for B2B SaaS companies. My clients are marketing directors at mid-size companies.
My writing style is direct and conversational. No jargon. Short paragraphs.
I need: email sequences, landing page copy, and blog posts. American English.
I've uploaded my brand voice guide and top 3 performing blog posts.
Pro tip, multiple Projects: Create separate Projects for each area of your work: client copywriting, personal blog, business strategy, coding. Each maintains its own context. This is actually MORE organized than ChatGPT's memory. You can also import ChatGPT memory directly: Settings > Capabilities > Import.
Difference #4: Claude Won't Just Agree With You
ChatGPT has a well-documented sycophancy problem; it was so extreme after a 2025 GPT-4o update that OpenAI had to roll it back. Claude is trained to be honest, not agreeable. It will flag concerns and question your framing.
Try these prompts to unlock honest feedback:
Poke holes in this plan. What am I missing?
What's the weakest part of this strategy?
Be brutally honest. Would you invest in this?
What are 3 ways this could fail that I haven't considered?
Real example: you share a hiring plan assuming 3-month ramp-up. ChatGPT: "Great hiring plan! Here's how to execute each phase..." Claude: "Your 3-month ramp assumption is aggressive. Industry data shows 6-9 months. If you staff based on 3 months, you'll be understaffed for Q3."
Difference #5: Prompts Work Completely Different
In ChatGPT, you write commands: "Write me a cover letter." Claude responds to commands fine, but it responds to SITUATIONS dramatically better. Instead of telling Claude what to produce, tell it what you're dealing with.
ChatGPT way vs Claude way:
Command:
Write me a follow-up email to a client.
Situation:
I need to follow up with a client who went quiet after my $5K proposal two weeks ago. They seemed excited but haven't responded to two emails. I don't want to seem desperate but need to close by end of month.
Same task. The situation version produces a dramatically better email. The formula: Context + Constraint + Goal = Great Output.
More examples:
Command: "Write a LinkedIn post about AI." Situation:
I run a 15-person agency and saved 20h/week with AI. My audience is skeptical agency owners. Write a post that's honest about the learning curve but shows real ROI.
Command: "Help me with my resume." Situation:
I'm a senior PM at a fintech startup applying for VP Product at a Series C company. My resume reads like tasks. Restructure it to lead with outcomes.
What ChatGPT Still Does Better
No guide is useful if it's not honest:
- Image/video generation (DALL-E + Sora): Claude can't create visuals
- Voice mode: ChatGPT's real-time voice is more polished
- Web browsing on the free tier: Claude's web search requires a paid tier
- Custom GPTs marketplace: Claude doesn't have an equivalent yet
- Mathematical reasoning: GPT-5.2 scores 100% on AIME 2025 vs Claude's 92.8%
- Global memory: ChatGPT's passive memory is more seamless day-to-day
The smart play: Keep both. Claude for writing, analysis, strategy, coding, and reasoning. ChatGPT for images, voice, web searches, and math. The cost of both subscriptions is less than one hour of a consultant's time.
Your First Hour With Claude
Do these 6 things and you'll immediately get better results than 90% of new users:
- Import your ChatGPT memory. Settings > Capabilities > Import memory. Takes 2 minutes.
- Create your first Project. Add your role, audience, writing style, and upload 2 to 3 reference docs.
- Try a situation prompt. Describe a real problem with full context. Compare the output to ChatGPT.
- Turn on extended thinking. Toggle it on for a complex question. Watch Claude reason step by step.
- Ask Claude to critique something. Share a plan and say "poke holes in this." See what comes back.
- Create a second Project. One for a different area of your work. More specific = better performance.
Quick habit translation:
- "Write me a..." becomes "Here's my situation... I need..."
- New chat for each task becomes: use Projects to maintain context
- Accept first response becomes: ask "go deeper" for more detail
- "Is this a good idea?" becomes "Poke holes in this. What am I missing?"
- Re-explain preferences every chat becomes: set up Project instructions once
